  1. I didn't stipulate that the song be from a certain era...

  2. I am not yet enamored with the song either-- it's a recent fascination.
Here are two I'm really fond of, avocal and vocal.

  3. If I may post some songs that I really like that sort of pick up on traditionalist themes, since that might be of interest:

Honestly, from Wagner I find the Pilgrim's Chorus from Tannhauser (my favorite opera bar none) to be the most moving few minutes in music.

  4. Apropos Cbs post: I really like national anthems from the 1800s. I also like WWII-era songs from all sides in the war, including Russia.

  5. Thank you for that first one especially. So many of these songs fail to have full versions. You basically get the first verse and refrain, so it is nice to hear the whole thing.

I DO like the Internationale. It is very moving: I recall a passage in "Witness" where Whittaker Chambers remarks that even upon his conversion he found the song to be stirring.

An aside: I am not a "fanatical" anti-communist because I deny the importance of politics in the grand scheme of things. Shouldn't your pessimism have a similar salt of fatalism? It is difficult to get worked up about these things....
